Url manipulation with mod_rewrite and php-catcher for beginners

Url manipulation is one of the hottest areas on the new generation web (2.0). It provides more security and flexibility. It is user and search-engine friendly. The most popular combination is Apache-webserver + mod_rewrite + server-side catcher(mostly a php-file). In this tutorial we use very short examples to make it easy for newbies.

Why url manipulation & mod_rewrite?

  1. more security: hide file location
  2. shorter urls without file extensions like .html
  3. easy to remember / recommend urls
  4. search engine friendly

How Alexa rate websites

I still do not understand how Alexa works. Does Alexa ignore totally internet users without Alexa toolbar? Or just estimate them? For some branches internet users using much toolbar and for some branches no toolbar. How can Alexa mess them correctly? I think Google should buy Alexa and not Amazon!

Disallow "/image_captcha*" for Crawlers

You should disallow "/image_captcha*" for webcralwlers like Google Image, Yahoo slurp Msnbot etc. Otherwise your server has to create thousand of captcha images daily just for nothing.

Why MSN-Live SE use fake referer?

In last months I see many referrers from msn/live.com from urls with top keywords like music, image, video, chat, forum etc.

http:// search.live.com/results.aspx?q=car

But when I visit that serp page I see just results from major sites on the web. I dont either expect that my small site appears on first page but just wondering why msnbot use such a trick. Whatever i didnt like it!
